Since being diagnosed prenatally with end-stage renal disease, 14-month-old Malachi Hemraj has persevered through medical challenges with his family’s unwavering support.
At 32 weeks pregnant, Malachi’s mother, Sabrina, was informed that Malachi had had no amniotic fluid as it was trapped inside one of his kidneys. This caused Malachi to have underdeveloped lungs, requiring close monitoring until birth.
When Malachi was born at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, he required a ventilator to breathe and was later sent to the Stollery Children’s Hospital for better care. At Stollery, Malachi underwent surgery to drain his kidneys, which was unfortunately unsuccessful.
Currently, Malachi requires daily dialysis and weekly bloodwork administered by professionals at home until he is eligible for a kidney transplant. Malachi is stable but has been admitted to Stollery Children’s Hospital recurrently, and relies on G-tube feeding that calls for regular follow-up consultations at various clinics.
Both of Malachi’s parents are presently unable to work, as they must stay at home due to the possibility of emergencies involving Malachi’s health in addition to his frequent appointments.
Community Key was able to alleviate some of the Hemraj family’s financial burden by assisting with their housing payment. We are wishing Malachi a safe and successful surgery when he is able to undergo a kidney transplant in the future.
