Community Key 2025 Softball Tournament: Hitting it Out of the Park

Updated: 3 days ago

This year’s Fourth Annual Slowpitch Tournament in support of Community Key was an incredible success, and we are still feeling an outstanding sense of gratitude after seeing everyone come out to support such a great cause.

Team members from Quantus Mortgage Solutions competed with real estate industry friends and colleagues at the Calgary Industrial Softball Diamonds on Thursday June 26th, raising money and awareness for Community Key in the process.

Setting the Stage

Before our tournament, QMS team members gathered to create a humorous informational video to share with tournament participants to explain the do’s and don’ts of softball.

Throughout the tournament day, people could be seen watching the video together to learn some of the specific tournament rules while having a laugh. If you haven’t seen it yet, you don’t want to miss out.

Thank you to Carola Singer, Todd Fralic, Austin Rieger, Abby Fralic, and Rio Pisony for acting in the video!

Bringing Our A-Game

We stepped it up from last year, adding two more teams for a total of eight teams competing. While the first Quantus Slowpitch Tournament was hosted sixteen years ago, 2025 marked the fourth year that the tournament has been used as a fundraiser for Community Key.

Through the years, the day has shifted from a small tournament for QMS brokers to a large event that brings together a variety of members in the community. Friends, family, and colleagues gather to support CK’s initiatives regardless of softball experience, making it a day that participants look forward to year after year.

Last year was a first in tournament history, because neither Quantus co-owner’s Paul or Todd’s team made it to the final game. Instead, two lender and industry teams competed in the finals, with Strive’s Associate Vice President Western Canada, Tiffany Pederson’s Blue Team ultimately taking the title of tournament champions.

This year, all eight teams were determined to take the prize, battling it out in the perfect weather with the hopes of taking home the coveted Community Key Invitational Cup.

Photos and videos of the action were captured by Abby Fralic, Rio Pisony, and Cassandra Henrichsen.

Between games, participants and spectators gathered for a BBQ lunch grilled by QMS brokers Alfred Gabriel and Tony Piattelli.

Obstacle Course Showdown

We promised that each year’s tournament would be even more exciting and memorable than the last, and this year was no different.

Before the final game, everyone gathered to watch the Obstacle Course Showdown, an exciting and hilarious competition between QMS co-owners Paul Bojakli and Todd Fralic, Bridgewater Bank Director of National Sales, Steve Leishman, and Neo Financial Mortgage Relationship Specialist, Jason Mykes.

To increase the stakes and raise additional money for Community Key, spectators could place bets on their “race horse,” guessing which competitor they thought would win. One name would be drawn from the correct betters, and that name would win half of the total dollars collected from the race.

The race was simple… or was it? The four racers began by spinning around a bat, then dizzily made their way to first base, where they would grab a hobby horse to jump over a series of obstacles.

From second to third base they would have to keep a hula hoop spinning. We didn’t specify how, and Mykes was clever enough to spin his hoop on his arm, flying by the competition.

Next the racers would have to hammer a few nails into a piece of wood before finishing the race to home plate in a colourful potato sack.

Mykes was the ultimate winner by a landslide, much to the dismay of many audience members who betted against him.

However, while Katrina Patel’s name was drawn from Myke’s pool of donors, she kindly donated the money back to Community Key, raising an additional few hundred dollars to the cause.

If you missed it or would like another set of laughs, you can watch a video of the race here, complete with Go-Pro footage capturing Bojakli’s point of view.

A Title Defended

After the obstacle course the teams in the final were announced. The Lender team, captained by Steve Leishman and consisting of many defending champions from last year’s team, faced off against Annette Milbers’ team from Station Athletics.

Both teams dominated in their respective pools, going three for three in round robin gameplay. It was no surprise that the Lender Team would get the chance to defend their title, and the Station Athletics Team would try their best to take it.

Ultimately, the Lender Team came out victorious, defending their champion title and winning for the second year in a row. The question is, will there be a three-peat next year, or will a new team come together to win the Community Key Invitational Cup?

The Perfect Lineup

In addition to a day full of softball, we raised money for Community Key through a variety of fundraising activities at the diamonds, including the sale of CK branded merchandise, a 50/50 draw, the Obstacle Course Showdown, and contributions from our sponsors.

In total we raised over $20,000, which directly goes into supporting families with a critically injured or terminally ill child in the hospital by assisting with their housing payments.

We are incredibly close to helping our 200th family, with 197 families helped through ten years of giving. Events like these make it all possible, and remind us that family is what’s truly key.
