In the fall of 2024, 13-year-old Mateo, from Edmonton, was diagnosed with a relapse of Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a form of cancer that affects the lymphatic system. As the youngest of two siblings, Mateo had already been through nearly a year of treatment when a scan revealed the cancer had returned.
He began a new round of therapy and had to stay home from school, avoiding public places for several months. This was a difficult adjustment for such an active and social young teen.
His parents, both working full-time in trucking and warehouse roles, faced the challenge with strength and resilience. They shared how much it meant to have access to temporary housing close to the hospital, made possible by Community Key. It helped ease both the emotional and financial pressures during an incredibly difficult time.
Community Key volunteer and Quantus Mortgage Solutions Underwriter, Cara Ball visited Mateo and his family.
“The family was so welcoming and warm and all very grateful for the support. Mateo is an active young man who is so strong but scared of what lies ahead. His family's faith and resilience are amazing to me.”
We were honoured to support Mateo’s family when they needed it most. Thanks to donors and supporters like you, Community Key continues to help families stay together during life’s toughest moments.
