In June 2024, 14-year-old Nik, from Edmonton, experienced a fall that led to the discovery of hydrocephalus, a condition that causes excess fluid in the brain. That moment marked the beginning of a series of health challenges, including multiple surgeries and the diagnosis of a low-grade brain tumour.
Over the following months, Nik received care at several hospitals, including Stollery Children’s Hospital, underwent brain surgery, and was treated for a broken wrist. Due to the tumour's location, his medical team is closely monitoring its growth through regular MRIs and outpatient appointments. While his condition is currently stable, his long-term prognosis remains uncertain as he continues to be monitored for low-grade glioma, a slow-growing brain tumour.
Through it all, Nik’s mom, Selena, has been at his side. With the help of Community Key, they received support with their housing payment, giving them one less thing to worry about while focusing on Nik’s care and recovery.
“Thank you so much for this incredible news! We are beyond grateful for the assistance Community Key is providing to our family. This support brings such peace of mind during a challenging time, and we can’t express enough how much it means to us.”
Quantus Mortgage Solutions broker and Community Key volunteer, Don Ray Santiago, visited Nik and Selena to deliver a cheque and a few small gifts from earlier this year. We’re so grateful to Nik and Selena for sharing their story, and for allowing others to draw strength from it.
